Joint research and teaching with colleagues from the State University of Zanzibar

After many years of informal collaboration between our working group and scholars at the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA), we are currently working on the institutionalisation of our joint research and teaching interest.

Among other activities, we organised a student fieldtrip to Zanzibar in 2018 in which students from both universities worked together and shared their experiences. A similar event is planned for 2023 in close cooperation with Dr. Makame – this time hopefully also including a visit of some Zanzibari students to Mainz.

In 2020, we conducted a small housing survey together in Zanzibar investigating the current dynamics on the rental market as well as future housing preferences. Currently, we are linking this to property investments focusing on houses formerly confiscated by the government after the so-called Zanzibar revolution. To interpret the results and work on joint publications while also preparing future student exchange, we hope to be able to welcome our colleagues to Mainz this year in July.
