TEACHING

Our team members contribute to the teaching in the different study programmes offered within the geography department at JGU Mainz. Apart from introductions to current conceptual debates in cultural geography and methodological exercises, we offer courses that allow students to gain first experiences in developing their own research projects. The fieldtrips and excursions we organise are usually directly linked to our own research activities and regional expertise as this provides the ground for a more intensive engagement with the chosen context.

Which textbooks do you recommend?
In recent years, a number of German textbooks have been published that provide a very good overview of particular fields of research. Still, we also recommend English textbooks as they are written in a very accessible style and give a more differentiated overview and introduction into major debates particularly with regard to cultural geography. Below you find a selection of titles that we also use in our teaching.

Can you recommend a textbook which provides some guidance on how to proceed when developing a thesis?
Yes, the following resources we do consider particularly helpful.

Peters, K. (2017) Your human geography dissertation. Designing, Doing, Delivering, Sage.
Baade, J., Gertel, H. & Schlottmann, A. (2021) Wissenschaftlich Arbeiten. Ein Leitfaden für Studierende der Geographie, UTB.
How do I proceed if I wish to write my thesis in cultural geography?
Once you have come up with an idea for a thesis topic you should directly approach the person you would like to become your supervisor. Below you find an overview of potential supervisors within our working group including key themes and methodological approaches. After a first exchange to check if this would be a good fit for your ideas, we usually ask you to write a proposal in which you develop your researchquestion based on the literature, embed your research focus in the state-of-the-art and outline your methodological approach (if your thesis should include empirical research) in about 3-4 pages. You will receive feedback from your supervisor and may also be asked to revise the proposal before you officially register your thesis. In the following we will also be happy to answer your questions that arise while working on the thesis and to give you feedback, esp. with regard to questions concerning your main argument, the interpretation of your empirical material and the development of your structure/outline.
Who can supervise my thesis in cultural geography?
The following team members can supervise your thesis.

Julia:

Sandra:
